Trump urged Spain to 'build a wall' across Sahara, says minister

President Donald Trump had a suggestion for how Spain could deal with Europe's migration crisis during a recent meeting with Foreign minister Josep Borrell, according to reports in the Spanish media.

A Spanish foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that Mr Borrell had said what was reported, "We can confirm that's what the minister said, but we won't be making any further comment on the minister's remarks".

"The border with the Sahara can not be bigger than our border with Mexico", Borrell said Trump told him this summer, according to the ministry official.

The US-Mexico border is a little under 2,000 miles long.

Spain also has no border with the Sahara, meaning it would have to build the barrier on foreign land.

The world's biggest desert stretches 3,000 miles across several worldwide borders in North Africa - including the Morocco/Algeria border.

According to Borrell, who was said to have made the remarks on Tuesday during a lunch at Club Siglo XXI in Madrid, while referring to the increase in the number of African youth migrants, Trump made the remark recently.

Chuck Grassley , staffers conducted a phone call with Kavanaugh late Monday afternoon, while Democrats refused to take part. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he was open to hearing from Ford, while resisting calls to delay the vote.

In June, Trump received global backlash when the USA government separated migrating children from parents, some asylum seekers after crossing the border.

Borrell made it clear he disagreed with the plan, although Spain has built 20-foot walls topped with razor wire around its African territories of Melilla and Ceuta.

He insisted the U.S. border with Mexico was wider than the Sahara desert.

Spain has found itself at the forefront of Europe's migration crisis.

A total of 33,611 migrants have arrived in Spain by sea so far this year, according to figures released this week by the International Organisation for Migration.

Spain has now overtaken Italy and Greece as the most popular destination for migrants.

Building a wall along the US-Mexico border - and getting Mexico to pay for it - was one of the key policies of Trump's presidential campaign.
