Russia Says Plane Downing Result of 'Premeditated' Actions by Israeli Pilots

Russia Says Plane Downing Result of 'Premeditated' Actions by Israeli Pilots

On Monday, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a statement that the country will give a S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to the Syrian regime forces within two weeks.

Russian Foreign Minister Shoigu justified Russia's delivery of the S-300, stating, "We are convinced that the implementation of these measures will cool hotheads and prevent ill-considered actions threatening our servicemen".

However, what is less encouraging is the fact that the S-300 system in Syrian hands can be used as an offensive weapon to threaten Israel's civilian air traffic.

Earlier in the war, Russian Federation suspended a supply of S-300s, which Israel feared Syria could use against it. Mr Shoigu said Russian Federation is now going to go ahead with the shipment because "the situation has changed".

Fifteen Russian airmen were killed when the Ilyushin 20 airplane was mistakenly shot down by Syria's air defenses soon after an Israeli strike near the Syrian coastal city of Latakia. But if Syria somehow leaked the signal, the U.S. or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation could trick all Russian air defenses into their fighters were friendly Russian jets, leaving Russia open to attack, according to Sokov. (The Israel Defense Forces stated that its operation last week targeted a Syrian facility that was about to transfer weapons to Hezbollah on behalf of Iran.) But both Russian Federation and Israel will continue to have the same reasons as before to do business with each other.

Monday's incident highlighted the dangers posed by the conflicting interests of various powers in the crowded skies over war-torn Syria and threatened to damage relations between Russian Federation and Israel.

Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone on Monday night and agreed to continue their security coordination in Syria.

The dead included a one-year-old boy, who was swept away from his mother as they tried to escape their vehicle amid floodwaters. Previously, North Carolina's rainfall record from a storm was 24 inches, set by Hurricane Floyd almost twenty years ago.

Uncertainties linger about the details of exactly what happened in the Syrian skies last week, and this uncertainty may account for early inconsistency in Russia's response, which went from hard to soft and back to hard.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said Monday that he hopes Russian Federation will reconsider supplying missiles to Syria, noting that it is a would be a "major mistake" and "significant escalation".

Israel strongly disputed the assertion and vowed it will continue to act against Iranian targets in neighboring Syria.

"According to information of our military experts, the reason (behind the downing) were premeditated actions by Israeli pilots which certainly can not but harm our relations", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Russian antiicraft missile systems - the S-300, right, and the S-400 - on display at a military industrial exhibition in Zhukovsky, in the Moscow region, on August 14, 2014. Putin says it was the result of "tragic accidental circumstances".

Russian Federation launched its campaign in support of President Bashar Assad in 2015, eventually turning the tide of war in favor of Syrian government forces.

The Jerusalem Post further suggested that now, Syrian air defenses are largely outdated Soviet-era systems as well as more sophisticated tactical systems.
