Flights, Trains Canceled as Typhoon Hits Japan

Evacuation orders were issued for tens of thousands of people over a widespread area, including more than 250,000 people in the city of Tokushima on the island of Shikoku, the national broadcaster NHK reported.

A woman in her 60s was missing in Miyazaki prefecture, southern Japan, after she was washed away in a paddy irrigation channel, according to NHK.

About 320 domestic and global flights into and out of Naha Airport were canceled for September 29. Tokyo's train lines announced they were shutting down after 8 p.m. local time.

The typhoon was coming very close to the southern part of Kyushu in southern Japan in the morning of September 30 and was dumping torrential rain in the area.

Japan Meteorological Agency issued warning of landslides and flooding from possible storm surges.

The storm was forecast to smash into the mainland near Osaka and churn across the Japanese archipelago, likely hitting areas still recovering from a series of extreme weather events that have battered Japan in recent months.

Television footage showed cars in Okinawa island flipped over by the strength of the wind.

Five people suffered injuries in storm-related accidents in Okinawa, but no one was feared dead, local officials said. More than 750,000 homes lost power.

Many flights and trains services were cancelled as the storm moved eastward.

"From around 2pm, we saw incredible winds and rain".

Residents in all these communities could be left without power and water for several days or even weeks in the wake of Typhoon Trami.

Osaka's Kansai International Airport (KIX) preemptively closed its airport until Monday, which has led to hundreds of flight cancellations. The bullet train service between Kumamoto and central Kagoshima was also halted, according to the Kyushu Railway. Nearly all of services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line are also being suspended throughout September 30, according to Central Japan Railway Co.

Kansai International Airport in Osaka, western Japan, which was heavily flooded by a typhoon last month, said it had closed its runways from 11am (02:00 GMT) on Sunday until 6am on Monday.
