'Unsafe and Unprofessional': Chinese warship sails within 45 yards of Navy destroyer

'Unsafe and Unprofessional': Chinese warship sails within 45 yards of Navy destroyer

After the Chinese ship came within 45 yards (41 metres) of Decatur's bow it moved to prevent a collision, the report said.

China's defense ministry accused the United States of traveling near islands claimed by Beijing and ordered its ship to force the Decatur away from the Spratly Islands.

It is now routine for British, Japanese, Australian, and US ships to sail the area, disregarding incessant warnings and orders from Chinese military officials who call worldwide presence in the region a violation of Chinese sovereignty.

Commander Nate Christensen, US Pacific Fleet deputy spokesman, released a statement saying that US Navy ships operate throughout the South China Sea routinely and, "for decades" the US forces would "continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere worldwide law allows".

The Arleigh Burke-class USS Decatur (DDG 73) was built at Bath Iron Works in 1996.

China often acts assertively against foreign warships in proximity to the South China Sea islands it occupies.

The USS Decatur was in the region conducting a so-called "freedom of navigation operation", which the US periodically undertakes as a display to China that Beijing's claim to sovereignty over the waters and islands in the area has not been internationally recognised.

Beijing says its facilities in the waters are for defensive purposes, but some experts say this is part of a concerted bid to cement de facto control of the South China Sea. Different parts of the area are also claimed by Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. In 2013, the USS Cowpens was forced to take evasive action in order to avoid a collision with a Chinese warship less than 460 meters (500 yards) off its bow while operating in global waters in the South China Sea.

The U.S. carries out freedom of navigation operations by sending Navy ships and aircraft near disputed waters to demonstrate the right to travel through what it considers worldwide waters and airspace.

Washington has said the aim is to reject what it considers excessive maritime claims by any country.

Wu explained that a Chinese Navy vessel carried out identification and verification procedures in accordance with law and warned the U.S. vessel off.

After the incident on September 30, the Chinese government abruptly canceled a high-level security dialogue planned for mid-October in Beijing.

It followed closely the decision by the USA government to sanction Chinese military figures over their purchases of Russian combat aircraft and missile systems.

Earlier Monday, reports surfaced that China had called off a security conference with United States officials.

Those comments came after Trump accused China of meddling in the upcoming U.S. elections.

The military strain between the world's two largest economies has deepened even as they're locked in an increasingly heated trade war.

Washington last week enacted new tariffs against China covering another $200 billion of its imports.
