Melania Trump visits baby elephants, takes Kenya safari

Melania Trump visits baby elephants, takes Kenya safari

The first lady's visit to Nairobi National Park led to the first security panic of the solo trip when a boisterous elephant almost knocked her over, prompting a Secret Service agent to rush forward and grab her.

The US first lady left Malawi on Thursday afternoon and is set to also tour Egypt after leaving Kenya.

Melania Trump, who is in Africa to promote her children's welfare program, described her visit to the Chipala primary school as "an awesome experience". The soccer balls, along with tote bags donated for the teachers, sported the logo of "Be Best", the child well-being initiative Mrs. Trump launched this year.

Mrs Trump's solo trip is not out of the ordinary.

The New York Times noted Mrs Trump spent much of her time expressing her appreciation to her hosts, repeatedly thanking them for welcoming her.

Mrs. Trump arrived in the West African nation on Tuesday to open her first extended solo global tour.

Mrs. Trump seemed reticent at first but she eventually stepped down from the platform she was standing on to take a large milk bottle with a big red nipple and feed some of the orphaned elephants being raised at the park a few miles outside of downtown Nairobi.

The school is among those in the landlocked country that receive education assistance from the US Agency for International Development, including textbooks. The visit also included promoting the work of the U.S. Agency for International Development, whose funding President Donald Trump has twice proposed slashing by almost a third.

Melania Trump's visit to Africa is seen by some observers as an effort to mend fences after her husband's reported comment that the continent contained "shithole" countries. She approached a crowd of children in royal-blue-and-orange school uniforms who sang in English, "Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome all of you". Trump has twice tried unsuccessfully to slash USAID's budget by a third. It comes after January reports that her husband complained about immigrants coming to the USA from "s-hole" countries, a phrase President Trump denied making.

The first ladies are expected to walk through the gardens and watch a traditional dance performance.

Otherwise, he said, "She'll get some nice photos and it won't do anything to move the needle on USA interests on the continent".

Her first-ever visit to Africa is also her first extended solo global trip as first lady in what some see as "fence-mending". Later during a visit at the US embassy in Malawi , the first lady called her visit to the school an "amazing experience".
