Google shutting down Google+

Google shutting down Google+

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations" along with "very low usage" as the reasons for the move.

News of the bug sent shares of Google's parent company, Alphabet, down as much as 2.2 percent to $1,142.43 on Monday afternoon.

The affected data is limited to static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age, Google said. In other words, when an app requests access to Google account data, multiple dialog boxes pop up, each with a request for a particular permission, rather than one large dialog box with all the requested permissions (i.e. location, contacts, calendars) lumped together.

In a blog, the company said it had discovered and patched the leak in March and had no evidence that data has been misused or anyone had exploited it.

Up to 438 applications may have had access to the vulnerability, but Google said it had found no evidence that outside developers were aware of the security flaw and no indication that any user profiles were misused. March was when a software bug was fixed that allowed third-party developers to access personal data. If this were a bug in Facebook discovered by Project Zero, it would have been documented by the team in public for all to see - yet Google kept a lid on its own cockup.

United States lawmakers are concerned that the big tech companies have come under scrutiny for a variety of reasons in recent years.

'Chuck Chequers', Johnson challenges May on #Brexit
Cable said that May said the Conservatives must be a party for the whole country, adding "yet she has overseen widening divisions in our society".

It also announced other security features. The official explanation from company representatives is that a thorough study of potentially affected users was completed before the public announcement was made. In July, the company was criticized after reports that employees for a third-party email app could read our emails if we integrated those apps with our Gmail account. "Over the coming months, we will provide consumers with additional information, including ways they can download and migrate their data". Google rather famously snubbed the United States Senate Intelligence Committee when it chose to no-show a hearing on consumer privacy issues, a hearing that both Facebook and Twitter sent top leaders to.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai was briefed on the plan not to notify users after an internal committee had reached that decision, according to WSJ. In the wake of the report, Google posted that the breach or potential breach resulted from a bug in an API.

For now, though, Google will continue supporting Google+ for businesses.

The company will wind down Google+ over 10 months, targeting an August 2019 shutdown.

What's probably more interesting to most users is that the advertising giant opted to not disclose the issue. Google declined to comment beyond its blog post.
