Africa’s youngest billionaire kidnapped in Tanzania

Mohammed Dewji, who has been described as Africa's youngest billionaire, was abducted on Thursday morning by gunmen in Tanzania's economic capital Dar es Salaam, police said.

The billionaire heads the MeTL Group which operates in about 10 countries with interests in agriculture to insurance, transport, logistics and the food industry.

Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda said the businessman was kidnapped by two men as he entered the hotel.

Dar es Salaam police chief Lazaro Mambosasa told a press conference that the assailants had "shot into the air" before bustling Dewji into their vehicle.

Dewji, 43, is the owner of Tanzanian industrial conglomerate MeTL Group and has served as a lawmaker for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.

The armed men were foreigners, the Swahili Times reported on Twitter, citing Police Commander Lazaro Mambosasa.

Mr Dewji is also the main shareholder in Simba football club, based in Dar es Salaam.

Eye witnesses said four unidentified people arrived before the businessman and parked at the hotel.

An Uber driver nearby said when Mr Dewji appeared, the auto parked inside flashed lights before the two white men alighted from their vehicle and went straight to where Dewji was.

"They then got into the hotel and came out with someone whom I identified as Mohammed."According to Forbes, Dewji has an estimated net worth of US$1.54 billion (Sh154 billion), and is the 17th richest person in Africa". According to Forbes, the billionaire signed the Giving Pledge in 2016, promising to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes.
