Soyuz rocket crew rescued after emergency landing

Soyuz rocket crew rescued after emergency landing

NASA says it chose Hague as an astronaut in 2013 and completed training in 2015; he had been scheduled to perform at least two spacewalks as part of his mission on the space station. Which is good news for NASA and companies like SpaceX and Boeing that are developing similar systems for their manned spacecraft - but have never had to test them under live conditions.

Nasa astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos's Alexei Ovchinin lifted off in a booster rocket, intending to travel to the International Space Station (ISS).

The problem occurred when a booster rocket on the Soyuz-FG launch vehicle failed in some way, NASA said.

The failure put the MS-10 capsule into a ballistic trajectory and it and the crew were recovered 200 miles east of the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch point, NASA said early Thursday. The contingency procedure sends the spacecraft carrying the crew on a "sharper angle of landing compared to normal", NASA said. The space capsule landed near the Chinese border in deep snow about 20 minutes after launch. Dzhezkazgan is about 450 kilometres northeast of Baikonur.

The two crew members on board, cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague of NASA, are alive after performing an emergency landing.

Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency), NASA Flight Engineer Serena Auñón-Chancellor, and Roscosmos Flight Engineer Sergey Prokopyev-all of whom arrived at the station in June-are continuing to operate the ISS and conduct "important scientific research".

USA ends diplomatic visas for United Nations same-sex partners
That exception will only apply to diplomats, not to employees of the United Nations and other global organizations. The change poses a problem for some same-sex couples who are not legally allowed to marry in their home country.

The capsule's parachute deployed successfully, however, landing them on the grassy steppe about 250 miles from the Baikonur Cosmodrome rented by Russian Federation.

RIA news agency, citing its own source, reported that Russian Federation had made a decision to suspend all manned space launches following the "Soyuz" failure.

The rocket took off from Kazakhstan and was on its way to the International Space Station. Russian Federation stands to lose that monopoly in the coming years with the arrival of the SpaceX's Dragon v2 and Boeing's Starliner crew capsules.

"Today's kind of successful accident shows the importance of gaining that capability back here and having multiple forms of getting into space", Larson said.

Russia, which relies on boosters designed during the Soviet Union, has a reputation for reliability with spacecraft.

Glitches found in Russia's Proton and Soyuz rockets in 2016 were traced to manufacturing flaws at the plant in Voronezh. Officials are also investigating the odd hole recently found in a Soyuz spacecraft aboard the International Space Station. The hole cause a small oxygen leak while hooked up to the ISS. The crew is now being brought to Moscow.
