American Pilot May Have Been Involved In Ukraine Plane Crash

American Pilot May Have Been Involved In Ukraine Plane Crash

Ukrainian officials first reported the incident, noting that two pilots aboard the Su-27 had been killed in the crash during the joint multi-national exercise with US and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation air forces in the Khmelnytskyi region, according to The Associated Press.

The search and rescue group found bodies of two servicemen, the official confirmed.

The crash is under investigation.

The Su-27UB jet was taking part in Clear Sky 2018, a joint military exercise with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members taking place October 8 through 19 in Western Ukraine.

Soyuz rocket crew rescued after emergency landing
The two crew members on board, cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague of NASA, are alive after performing an emergency landing. The contingency procedure sends the spacecraft carrying the crew on a "sharper angle of landing compared to normal", NASA said.

Clear Sky-2018 is a 12-day joint multinational military drill involving nine nations: Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Estonia and the United States.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said two pilots aboard the Su-27 had been killed in the crash, which took place in the Khmelnytskyi region located in the western part of the country about 200 miles west of the capital of Kiev.

The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa confirmed that a U.S serviceman died in an accident, in a statement published on its website on October 17.

A statement said it "can confirm a US service member was involved in this incident", but stopped short of confirming the American's death. The exercises, called Clear Sky-2018, include members of the California's National Guard's Fresno-based 144th Fighter Wing group, according to a Facebook post. "It is now under investigation and we will continue to provide more information as it becomes available", it added. More details will be added as they emerge.
