Saudi Journalist Could Have Been Murdered By ‘Rogue Killers’

Saudi Journalist Could Have Been Murdered By ‘Rogue Killers’

Members of Khashoggi's family called for an investigation, in a statement released on Monday.

Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

But late Monday evening - after Turkish authorities placed high iron barriers in front of the consulate - a motorcade of six cars drew up and Turkish police and prosecutors entered the premises.

The footage of cleaners prompted speculations and jokes that they were called in to the consulate to remove any remaining evidence from the crime scene.

Sens. Marco Rubio and Jeff Flake, members of the Foreign Relations Committee, said Congress is prepared to move quickly and firmly if Trump fails to adequately respond to the October 2 disappearance of Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor. "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers - who knows", Trump told reporters.

Rubio's comments come a day after Trump vowed "severe punishment" for the U.S. ally if they were found responsible.

The disappearance and possible murder of Khashoggi poses a problem for Trump administration attempts to build a closer relationship with Saudi Arabia, notably through Jared Kushner's relationship with young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Mediaite reports the CNN claim is that the Middle East nation is preparing a report that will admit Khashoggi's death. According to CNN, the report will likely claim the interrogation was conducted without clearance or transparency.

The alleged incident led to business executives and media companies pulling out of a major investment conference in Saudi Arabia this month.

Saudi Arabia's Arab allies have rushed to its support.

King Salman has replaced two crown princes in the past.

Netflix is the first of the so-called Faang companies (Facebook, Apple , Amazon, Netflix and Google) to report this quarter. Net income came in at 89 cents per share, beating Wall Street's number by 21 cents a share.

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia warned that if it "receives any action, it will respond with greater action, and that the kingdom's economy has an influential and vital role in the global economy". He met King Salman in the morning and was due to meet the Crown Prince later.

The push by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, and Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman came amid backlash to the disappearance of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"If they don't buy it from us, they're going to buy it from Russian Federation or they're going to buy it from China", he said.

The prince, ambitious, aggressive and just 33 in a kingdom long ruled by aging monarchs, has considerable weight in Saudi government actions.

More than 20 Republican and Democratic senators instructed Trump last week to order an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance under legislation that authorizes sanctions for perpetrators of extrajudicial killings, torture or other gross human rights violations.

Turkey said Mr Erdogan "stressed the forming of a joint working group to probe the case".

The renowned journalist has not been seen since entering the building nearly two weeks ago.

Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi wrote for The Washington Post, and he was one of the loudest voices in America against the brutal Saudi Arabian regime. As if to drive the point home, a cleaning crew with mops, trash bags and cartons of milk walked in, past journalists waiting outside the consulate on Monday.

The World Bank, The New York Times, Bloomberg, CNBC and Uber have also announced their decision to pull out the conference amid the ongoing scandal around Khashoggi's disappearance. "Who knows?" the president said, describing the situation as "terrible".

Turkish sources allege he was killed by a 15-strong team of Saudi agents but Riyadh insists that he left the consulate unharmed.

A Turkish diplomatic source had earlier said that a joint Turkish-Saudi team would search the consulate. Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump for using the term "rogue killers". The Saudis continued to deny they killed the writer, but there were indications the story could soon change.
