Growing caravan of migrants pushes deeper into Mexico

Growing caravan of migrants pushes deeper into Mexico

A Mexican migration official who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly said that between Friday and Saturday, authorities had deported by bus about 500 people who voluntarily made a decision to return.

Such caravans have usually numbered in the hundreds and have passed unnoticed.

The poster invited people on a "Migrant march" with a slogan: "We're not leaving because we want to, but because we are being expelled by violence and poverty".

On Saturday, Mexican authorities opened the border for women and children on the overcrowded bridge, taking them to a shelter in the city of Tapachula, about 40 kilometers from Ciudad Hidalgo.

"We are going to reach the United States", Erasmo Duarte, a migrant from Danli, Honduras, told The Associated Press.

Maria Teresa Orellana, a resident of Lorenzo, handed out sandals. Cruz, 20, said she was going to ask for political asylum because of threats and repression she faced back in Honduras from President Juan Orlando Hernandez's governing party. It's the favorite - and only - toy of her two daughters, 4-year-old Victoria and 3-year-old Elisabeth, who trudged beside her gleaming with sweat.

Anthropologist Frank-Vitale adds that a caravan out of El Salvador is already in the works: "Inspired by Honduras there are rumored caravans to begin out of El Salvador on Oct 31". She wants to reach the U.S. but would stay in Mexico if she could find work here.

"I'm looking for a better future for my children".

"People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the USA will turn them away". Others, meanwhile, waded into the Suchiate River or took rafts to get to Mexico.

"In this way we confront the phenomenon of migration, because he who leaves his town does not leave for pleasure but out of necessity", said Lopez Obrador, who takes office December 1. "We have to sleep on the sidewalk, and tomorrow wake up and keep walking".

Garcia said he had seen cases of swollen, lacerated and infected feet.

Sears files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Storch said it is rising wages and competitive pressures that will result in more bankruptcies among big retailers "on the brink". In the 1980s, Sears went on a shopping spree, buying brokerage Dean Witter Reynolds and real estate company Coldwell, Banker.

President Trump has threatened to call up the USA military and shut the border with Mexico to keep out the group.

Throughout Saturday, around 900 migrants - exhausted of waiting on the bridge - resorted to crossing the Suchiate River below on makeshift rafts and police did not intervene as they clambered up the muddy riverbank on the Mexican side. Instead they accepted small groups for asylum processing and giving out 45-day visitor permits to some. Both leaders had spoken by phone with Pena Nieto and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence to discuss humanitarian aid and efforts to help people who want to return. Most had circumvented Mexican immigration officials and crossed the Suchiate river from Guatemala on rafts or by swimming. Some paid locals the equivalent of $1.25 USA to ferry them across the muddy waters.

President Donald Trump is again attacking Democrats over the mass caravan of Honduran migrants that have resumed marching through Mexico.

"The girl suffered greatly because of all the people crowded" on the bridge, Bueso said. In addition to those who crossed the river, immigration agents processed migrants in small groups and then bused them to an open-air, metal-roof fairground in Tapachula, where the Red Cross set up small blue tents on the concrete floor.

A Mexican police helicopter flies over a caravan of Central American migrants walking to the US, after the group departed Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018.

Mexico's Government has said throughout the past week that it would register the migrants and process requests for asylum. It released a video showing workers doling out food, medicine and medical treatment.

One migrant, who has a prosthetic leg, said he was determined to reach the US.

As a military helicopter circled overhead, migrants who said they were fleeing a toxic mix of violence, poverty and corruption in Central America wondered if police would seek to turn the caravan back.

Mexico's federal government said on October 20 that almost "900 migrants" arrived in the country via unauthorized means. He said he'd do any kind of work.

"Full efforts are being made to stop the onslaught of illegal aliens from crossing our [southern] border", he tweeted. Trump said on Twitter.
