Jamal Khashoggi demise: Saudi Arabia say journalist was murdered

Jamal Khashoggi demise: Saudi Arabia say journalist was murdered

Saudi Arabia said Sunday that it had formally apologized to the family of the slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi, even as its foreign minister called his killing at a consulate in Istanbul "a rogue operation" and denied that the kingdom's crown prince or intelligence service had any prior knowledge of the operation.

A member of the team dressed in Khashoggi's clothes to make it appear as if he had left the consulate, a Saudi official has said.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Sunday defended his decision to visit Saudi Arabia later this month despite the continuing turmoil following the killing of Washington Post columnist and activist Jamal Khashoggi. This claim has met widespread scepticism.

"Yes, we [had] visits, our interministerial top-level delegation went, there were meetings", the diplomat said in response to the question about whether Russian Federation still plans to attend the summit in the wake of Khashoggi's murder.

"The individuals who did this did this outside the scope of their authority", he added.

The crown prince, who observers far and wide believe was behind the kill order, called Khashoggi's son to express condolences, the authorities said.

Merkel added that she would continue to consult with worldwide partners about a coordinated reaction to the case.

"When it is cleared up, we will then see what happens next", Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom government is under pressure from some British lawmakers to halt its arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Sears files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Storch said it is rising wages and competitive pressures that will result in more bankruptcies among big retailers "on the brink". In the 1980s, Sears went on a shopping spree, buying brokerage Dean Witter Reynolds and real estate company Coldwell, Banker.

"There remains an urgent need for clarification of exactly what happened on October 2nd - beyond the hypotheses that have been raised so far in the Saudi investigation, which need to be backed by facts to be considered credible", the three countries said in a joint statement. Pompeo arrives for meetings in Saudi Arabia with King Salman and Prince Mohammed.

However, several of Saudi Arabia's neighbours and allies have come out in its support.

Is this the end of Saudi prince's honeymoon?

The officials say Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump agreed during their call late on Sunday that the journalist's case "should be brought to light in all aspects".

Where is the investigation now?

Police have searched the nearby Belgrad forest in Istanbul where they believe the body may have been taken and one official was hopeful its fate would be known "before long".

Meanwhile, Turkish crime-scene investigators swarmed a garage Monday night in Istanbul where a Saudi consular vehicle had been parked.

Turkey's ruling party said on Monday Jamal Khashoggi was the victim of a "monstrously planned" murder, dismissing Riyadh's assertion he died in a fight, as Western incredulity deepened over varying Saudi accounts of the journalist's disappearance. The attackers reportedly rolled up his body in a rug and gave it to a local person for disposal.
