Pakistani cleric Maulana Samiul Haq, known as ‘father of Taliban’, shot dead

Haq's son, Hamidul Haq, said his father was alone in his bedroom when he was attacked by an assailant, who escaped undetected.

He was regarded as the "Father of the Taliban" because of the relationship between a student (Talib) and Teacher is a relationship of Father and Child, and had close ties to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.

Haq was a senior religio-political figure who had twice been elected as a senator.

Speaking to the television channel, Hamidul Haq said Maulana Samiul was unable to participate in the protests against Asia Bibi's acquittal by the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case.

Maulana Samiul Haq was also the leader the Darul Uloom Haqqania religious seminary and was openly supporting the Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the killing of Maulana Samiul Haq and said that serious action would be taken against the killers.

Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi has also condemned the assasination. He formed Muttahida Deeni Mahaz (United Religious Front), an alliance of relatively small religio-political parties, to participate in Pakistani general election, 2013.

However, initial reports had said that Haq had been shot.

Prime Minister Imran Khan's party had sought to work closely with the prominent cleric to implement various reforms and mainstream madrasah education, Dawn.com reported. Khan's provincial government in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa donated millions of dollars to Haq's hard-line seminary.
