Protests in Pakistan over Christian woman’s acquittal end

Protests in Pakistan over Christian woman’s acquittal end

The husband of a Pakistani Christian woman at the centre of a divisive blasphemy case has pleaded for worldwide help to leave the country, saying he feared for his family's safety.

A top congressional rights body on Friday praised Pakistan's Supreme Court judges who acquitted a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy.

"We are grateful that the Pakistani government has released Asia and secured protection for her, and we urge public officials in the country to protect religious minorities from dubious charges such as these in the future", the statement said.

Her husband Ashiq Masih has asked the United Kingdom to grant his family refuge amid fears for their safety.

Bibi's husband, Ashiq Masih, has spoken in a video asking for asylum to be granted to the whole family and their guardian Joseph Nadeem in the United Kingdom, saying: "I am requesting the prime minister of the United Kingdom help us and as far as possible grant us freedom".

It comes after Ms Bibi's lawyer, Saiful Malook, fled Pakistan fearing for his life.

He also called for asylum from US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the clip. She and her family have suffered enough, she just needs a country willing to cut through the bureaucracy.

Wilson Chowdhry, of the British Pakistani Christian Association, told AFP that the family was resting its hopes on the US, Britain or Canada to grant them asylum and help them reach a place of safety.

Packers trade Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Washington for draft pick
Brice and Whitehead have traded reps for much of the season at strong safety, while Clinton-Dix had occupied the free safety spot. With depth at cornerback after signing Bashaud Breeland , the Packers could move Tramon Williams to safety.

"Hundreds of thousands of people have rioted and called for her death".

Many from Islamist political parties took to the streets to protest her freedom, leading to the government making a deal with the Tehreek-e-Labbaik party (TLP), agreeing to consider putting Asia's name on an Exit Control List of people who can't leave the country, if they stop protesting.

Other demonstrations have blocked key motorways to Islamabad, causing traffic jams.

Asiya Bibi was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 in a blasphemy case for her alleged comments against Prophet Mohammed during an argument with three Muslim women.

Mulook told Reuters in a WhatsApp message he had gone overseas "just to save (my) life from angry mob" and because of fears for the safety of his family.

"I consulted and everybody is of this opinion (that I should leave)".

Her current whereabouts is unknown. In return, the Islamists halted their protests, which had blocked roads and brought life to a standstill in parts of the country.
