Macron warns rising risk of nationalism to world peace

Putin meanwhile said he and Trump - at odds over Washington's sanctions and the abandonment of a Cold War-era nuclear treaty - had had a brief but positive conversation during the centenary events. Trump is attending centennial commemorations in Paris this weekend to mark the Armistice that ended World War I.

"Though sadly he did not make it, he was among the countless young men who never returned home, but through their sacrifice, they ascended to peace in heaven", President Trump said. And Trump was not present as the other leaders arrived, walking side-by-side in a sombre, rain-soaked line holding black umbrellas as bells finished tolling.

He skipped out of a visit to an American military cemetery outside of Paris yesterday due to a threatened rainstorm, and did not walk with other world leaders in France today. The feminist activist group Femen later claimed responsibility.

French President Emmanuel Macron addresses the Paris Peace Forum in Paris, France, on November 11, 2018.

Trump took umbrage at a recent interview in which Macron talked about the need for a European army and listed the USA along with Russian Federation and China as a threat to national security.

The weekend exposed tensions with USA allies in Europe over Trump's decision to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russian Federation, which has kept the continent free of theater-range nuclear missiles for more than 30 years. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was positioned in pride of place between Mr Trump and Mr Macron, an eloquent symbol of victors and vanquished now standing together, shoulder to shoulder. But Mr. Trump later said he would instead sit down with him formally later this month at a world leaders' summit in Buenos Aires.

The German chancellor will be first to speak Sunday afternoon at a Forum for Peace which Macron hopes will help foster multilateralism. You know what I am?

Russian officials said the French had been the ones to ask that no separate Trump-Putin meeting be arranged Sunday in order not to distract from the solemn commemorations. And I say, really, we're not supposed to use that word.

Last time Putin and Trump met in Helsinki last July.

But Trump did not broach the divide as he paid tribute Sunday to US and allied soldiers killed in World War I during "a awful, terrible war" that marked America's emergence as a world power.

Speaking in an interview with the Kremlin-backed channel RT France earlier in the day, Putin confirmed the pair did not want to steal French President Emmanuel Macron's thunder.

The pair are in Paris, France, to mark 100 years since the armistice that ended World War I.

The geographical spread of the leaders in attendance showed how the "war to end all wars" left few corners of the earth untouched but which, little more than two decades later, was followed so quickly and catastrophically by the even deadlier World War Two.

"In a context of challenges to multilateralism, we reaffirm our commitment to existing worldwide organizations as well as our determination to allow them to be even more representative of the global community and shared values", wrote Macron and the heads of worldwide organizations in a joint statement published at the end of the first day of the Paris Peace Forum which opened Sunday.
