Russian Federation blocks Kerch Strait amid confrontation with Ukraine

Russian Federation blocks Kerch Strait amid confrontation with Ukraine

Later, press center of the Ukrainian Navy has confirmed that after leaving the 12-mile zone, Russia's coast guard ships opened fire at Ukraine's navy group.

The Russian Federal Security Service says that it has evidence that Ukraine is responsible for clashes between Russian and Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea.

"The Russian Federation has once again demonstrated its aggressive nature and complete neglect of the norms of worldwide law", the Navy said, referring to a treaty from 2003 which guarantees free passage through the Kerch Strait for Ukrainian and Russian vessels.

Noteworthy, the Russians enforced the blockade dispatching also Su-25 Frogfoot attack planes, which were spotted overflying the bridge area several times.

It placed a huge cargo ship beneath the Russian-controlled Kerch Strait Bridge to block access to the sea.

One vessel was hit by the strikes, injuring a crew member, the Ukrainian navy said.

Two gunboats were captured and a tug was forced to stop, a statement said.

The Ukrainian navy said the flotilla was continuing its journey regardless.

May defends draft Brexit deal
In London, a spokesman said Thursday that May "will shortly be updating cabinet on the state of the negotiations". Spain doesn't have a veto on the withdrawal agreement , which does not have to be approved unanimously.

The global community has largely not recognized Russia's annexation of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine.

Passage through the Kerch Strait had been "temporarily blocked" by Russian ships "for security reasons" when the incident unravelled, they added.

Both countries have accused each other of harassing each other's shipping in Sea of Azov in the past and the U.S. State Department in August said Russia's actions looked created to destabilize Ukraine, which has two major industrial ports there.

Dmitry Kiselyov, a commentator on the state-controlled Rossiya channel, told viewers of his Sunday evening news program that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko - encouraged by the USA - is looking to pick a fight with Russian Federation in the Black Sea. And Russia's Black Sea Fleet greatly outmatches the Ukrainian navy. The actions of the Ukrainian vessels prompted the Russian border guards to intervene.

In September, the Ukrainian navy accused Russian border guards of "acts of provocation" against its ships taking the same route.

Ukraine accused a Russian coastguard vessel, named the Don, of ramming one of its tugboats in "openly aggressive actions".

The incident came amid a confrontation at sea between Ukrainian and Russian vessels.
