UK Parliament Seizes Internal Facebook Documents

UK Parliament Seizes Internal Facebook Documents

Facebook, as is to be expected, is unimpressed: The company has written to Collins and Parliament asking that the documentation is placed off-limits and returned to the company, having been already the subject of a protective order by the San Mateo Superior Court.

It took action against Facebooko after investing $250,000 in an app. Six4Three alleges the cache shows Facebook was not only aware of the implications of its privacy policy, but actively exploited them, intentionally creating and effectively flagging up the loophole that Cambridge Analytica used to collect data.

The event is being held just days after Britain's parliament seized confidential Facebook documents from the developer of a now-defunct tech firm, a move that was considered unusually aggressive.

"We have asked the DCMS committee to refrain from reviewing them and to return them to counsel or to Facebook".

When he visited London recently, the culture, media and sport select committee demanded that he hand the documents over to Parliament.

"We are in uncharted territory", said Collins, who also chairs an inquiry into fake news.

The app maker, Six4Three, had acquired the files as part of a USA lawsuit against the social media giant.

Prepare for political fireworks on Tuesday as politicians from around the world gather for an "unprecedented" hearing into disinformation, fake news and privacy on Facebook's platform, hosted by the United Kingdom parliament.

"We have followed this court case in America and we believed these documents contained answers to some of the questions we have been seeking about the use of data, especially by external developers".

United Kingdom and worldwide parliamentarians from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Latvia and Singapore are gathering to grill Facebook's vice president of policy solutions, Richard Allan, at 11:30am local time (6:30am ET).

Committee Chairman Damian Collins tweeted on Sunday that it has "received the documents it ordered from Six4Three relating to Facebook". "We have no further comment".

Allan was responding to Canadian lawmaker Charlie Angus, who said the social media giant has "lost the trust of the global community to self-police", and that governments have to start looking at ways to hold the company accountable. They could take some solace in the fact that Facebook has seen its share price plunge by $100 billion since the breach of 87 million user profiles was revealed.
