Third Canadian Reportedly Detained in China

Third Canadian Reportedly Detained in China

Chinese authorities have detained a Canadian woman over what they say are employment issues, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he didn't believe the case is linked to the recent arrests of two other Canadians in the country.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the cases don't appear to be linked, noting that tens of thousands of Canadians live, travel and work in China.

"We are looking into the details (but) this most recent one doesn't seem to fit the pattern set by the previous two", Trudeau told a press conference.

The news initially caused concern among some China-watchers, who suspected that the case could be connected to two previous arrests of Canadians in China this month.

Global Affairs said consular officials are helping the family of the detained person.

On December 1, Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of China's largest private company, Huawei, and the daughter of Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei, was arrested in Canada.

A spokesperson for Canada's foreign ministry confirmed the detention, but declined to offer further details other than that they are providing assistance to the family, The Globe and Mail reported.

When China responds to criticism of the Kovrig/Spavor detentions by raising the Meng case, that is an admission that it's all about retaliation.

China has said that both men are being investigated on suspicion of "harming state security", bringing that they may spend years in Chinese custody and be charged with espionage.

So United knew just what it was getting when it gave the game's most volatile character a route back into the dugout in 2016. The club is 19 pints behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who they lost to (1-3) last weekend.

The Chinese arrests of the other two Canadians came in the wake of Canada detaining Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who is now out on bail after five people pledged to secure a bail amount of Dollars 2.2 million on December 11.

Meng has been released on bail as she awaits an extradition hearing, though she has been ordered to remain in Canada in the meantime.

Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.

Former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor were both taken into custody in China shortly after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, at the request of the United States, in Vancouver on 1 December.

Bob Rae, Canada's special envoy to Myanmar and a former Liberal Party leader, tweeted yesterday that "there are no coincidences" and said the detentions look "too much like hostage taking".

The Australian paper said the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, comprising of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and the US, met in Nova Scotia in July to discuss what to do about Huawei.

USA officials say she lied to banks about Huawei's control of Hong Kong-based Skycom - a company that allegedly sold US goods to Iran in violation of US sanctions.

"The government thinks that stronger statements will lead to poor treatment of Canadians held by China and possibly result in more Canadians being detained and Canadian businesses in China being hurt by the Chinese government", Wiseman said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called last Friday for China to release the Canadians, saying their detention was "unlawful" and "unacceptable".
