Second Guatemalan child dies in United States immigration custody on Christmas Day

Second Guatemalan child dies in United States immigration custody on Christmas Day

On Monday night, the boy was nauseous and began vomiting and was sent back to the same hospital but died shortly after midnight on Tuesday, the agency said.

Hospital staff diagnosed the boy with a common cold but when he was evaluated for release they diagnosed a fever.

The Guatemalan government has been notified of the death, "and is now engaging the father and any family members in Guatemala", wrote the CBP.

The father and son were not identified, and the agency said it will release more details "as available and appropriate".

A 7-year-old girl, also from Guetemala, died earlier this month after being apprehended by border agents.

Jakelin and her father Nery Gilberto Caal Cuz were taken into custody on December 6 after crossing the border into New Mexico.

He is the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month.

Hours later, the pair were transported by bus to the nearest Border Patrol Station in Lordsburg-which is approximately 90 minutes away.

Kelsey Berreth Case: Fiance Patrick Frazee Charged With Missing Colorado Mom's Murder
Authorities have searched the property of Berreth's fiancé Patrick Frazee and their search there involved heavy digging equipment. Frazee voluntarily released his phone to be searched and allowed officers to take a DNA sample on December 12, his lawyer said.

The boy arrived in El Paso with his father December 18 and was transferred to the Alamogordo CBP station on Sunday, according to the statement.

Agency guidelines say immigrants generally shouldn't be detained for more than 72 hours in CBP holding facilities, which are usually smaller and have fewer services than ICE's detention centres.

"I was like, 'wow, ' I was shocked", Collman told The Post and Courier of Charleston, describing her call with Trump.

The death of the second child in the agency custody reiterated the criticism of the efforts by President Trump, whose fight for the border wall led to the shutdown of the government thanks to Democrats' opposition, to curb illegal immigration.

An investigation into CBP actions will be conducted by the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility, the news release said.

But the Trump administration said Caal's death showed the danger of her journey and the family's decision to cross the border illegally.

An US border patrol agent observes near the Mexico-US border fence, on the Mexican side, separating the towns of Anapra, Mexico and Sunland Park, New Mexico. The US authorities said that the girl did not consume any food or water for several days. She was flown by helicopter to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she died. It was not immediately known if the watchdog would open an investigation into the boy's death.
