Post-holiday, partial government shutdown to gain impact

Post-holiday, partial government shutdown to gain impact

"I can tell you it's not going to reopen until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it".

Trump ended the session by railing against the Democrats and former FBI director James Comey, whom he sacked in May 2017 in a move he later said stemmed from frustration over the federal investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. vote.

Mr. Trump has relented on his previous insistence that he wanted to build a "wall" on the southwest border, saying he now envisions the type of steel-slatted fence that was also built during the Obama and Bush administrations - and which many Democrats have voted to approve money for in the past.

A shutdown affecting parts of the federal government appeared no closer to resolution today, with President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats locked in a hardening standoff over border wall funding that threatens to carry over into January.

Despite surveys revealing that the measure is unpopular, and with the majority of respondents blaming Trump for the brinkmanship, the U.S. president has stuck to his guns.

President Trump speaks to members of the US Military from the Oval Office Christmas Day. But it's all the same thing. "It's a barrier from people pouring into the country, from drugs".

Furloughed federal workers have been given back pay in previous shutdowns.

You don't know me, but my grandfather was a game warden in Montana and we spent our vacations going to our 2 national parks.

Although Trump had said he would be "proud" to shut down the government until the wall could be fully funded, he has since tried to shift the blame to Democrats - specifically for not supporting a House-passed bill that includes $5 billion for the funding wall. Many rank-and-file workers have gone to social media with stories of the financial hardship they expect to face because of the shutdown. The White House has not yet provided further information on this new section of the wall.

Trump added that he wants to have the wall in place "by election time", apparently referring to November 2020 when he is up for re-election.

The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday that a physical barrier is off the option. This year, it's not just his pay but also his Christmas break on the line.

One union representing federal workers slammed Trump's claim.

Trump had previously said he was prepared for a lengthy shutdown and when asked on Wednesday how long he would wait to get what he wants, he said, "Whatever it takes". "But other than that, I wish everybody a very Merry Christmas".
