Worst of winter storm to hit well north of Mankato

A large winter storm coming on the heels of Christmas is expected to bring snow to Nebraska, the Dakotas and Minnesota this week.

A major snowstorm is headed our way beginning Wednesday evening for much of Minnesota.

They expect the low-pressure storm system to drop at least six inches of snow from northeastern Colorado to eastern North and South Dakota before sweeping through northern Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of MI.

The Twin Cities is predicted to see between 1 to 3 inches of snow by Wednesday afternoon.

There is also the possibility of the snow being mixed with rain, which could also turn into light freezing drizzle.

By Thursday night, however, temperatures will start to fall and all rain that fell through the day will freeze which could lead to some treacherous travel for at least the first part of Friday.

The winter storm warning extends south of St. Cloud. The snow will continue into Friday over parts of the Upper Midwest and Ontario, Canada.

Significant winter storm expected Thursday night into Friday night.

Cold wind chill values are also expected with the passage of the cold front on Friday or Friday night.

By Thursday in central Minnesota, the northwest wind could be 10 to 15 miles per hour with gusts of 20 miles per hour. Highs will only be in the low 30s today in Denver, with low 20s tomorrow. The very cold air could return next week as well. Overnight lows remained more than 20 below as 2017 drew to a close with daytime highs not rising above zero (think 5-8 degrees below zero in fact) and 7 inches of snow on the ground.

It's been a record year for precipitation in Nebrska-and that looks to continue through the New Year.
