Trump blamed the Democrats for the death of migrant children

Outgoing White House chief John Kelly said in an interview published Sunday that he had "nothing but compassion" for undocumented migrants crossing into the U.S., and undercut President Donald Trump's claims to be building a "wall" at the Mexico border.

"To be honest, it's not a wall", Kelly told the LA Times, upending an ongoing talking point from the White House that billions are needed to construct a massive, physical wall on the border between the United States and Mexico.

Trump has declined to comment on whether he might accept less than $5 billion for wall funding.

President Donald Trump on Saturday said the deaths of migrant children at the border are "strictly the fault of the Democrats" after two children in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection died in recent weeks.

"There may be a wall in some places".

But Kelly said the president never ordered him to do anything against the law, and that he would have quit if that had happened. "There may be technological enhancements", she said on Fox News Sunday. "But always saying "wall" or "no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border when it comes to the drugs pouring in".

"For those that naively ask why didn't the Republicans get approval to build the Wall over the a year ago, it is because IN THE SENATE WE NEED 10 DEMOCRAT VOTES, and they will gives us "NONE" for Border Security!" "I'm surprised that the Democrats are this lax on the wall".

Graham said he pitched Trump on a possible deal "that would include around $5 billion for border security slash wall slash fencing - whatever you want to call it, in areas that make sense - and deal with another problem that's looming".

"This is only about the Dems not letting Donald Trump & the Republicans have a win", Trump tweeted Thursday.

Gorsuch, he voted to grant the appeal, lift the judge's order and allow Trump's new policy to be enforced. But rights groups have challenged his new rules, saying they violate administrative and immigration laws.

"Our negotiations are at an impasse at the moment", said Sen. "I can't even go get a beer", he joked. "If we blame each other, this could last a long, long time".

'Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown'.

In his interview, Kelly was surprisingly critical of President Donald Trump's signature anti-illegal immigration effort, the border wall - an issue now at the forefront of national politics, and the crux of Trump's current budget stalemate with Congress.

Before the government officially shut down earlier this month, Trump said during a meeting with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that he'd be "proud the shut down the government for border security".

Graham told reporters he presented Trump with the idea for a "potential breakthrough" on budget talks during their two-hour lunch at the White House on Sunday.

His comments, the first to reference the children's deaths, came the same day Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was finishing a two-day visit to the southern USA border, where she said in a statement, "The system is clearly overwhelmed and we must work together to address this humanitarian crisis".

But on Sunday White House counselor Kellyanne Conway called discussion of the apparent contradiction "a silly semantic argument". "She had not suffered from a lack of water or food prior to approaching the border".

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, said she had returned from Hawaii to her home in San Francisco late last week and plans to return to Washington on Monday as she prepares to be sworn in for her 17th term and lead the new House Democratic majority.

"It is with them", she said, explaining why Trump was not reaching out to Democrats. "Now is a good time to fold in some way ... because once Democrats take control of the House, he is going to have a very losing hand".
