Trump boasts he ‘essentially’ fired Mattis

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan replaced James Mattis late Monday and vowed to work with President Donald Trump to advance his agenda after his predecessor professed his views weren't totally aligned with the president.

"How has he done in Afghanistan?"

The president - who was exempted from the draft during the Vietnam War over bone spurs - added that USA generals have done a bad job in Afghanistan over almost two decades and said that he thinks he "would've been a good general, but who knows".

"Thanks to Mad Dog Mattis that we have great military leaders". Trump says the USA should let the Taliban and Islamic State militants fight each other there. "ISIS is being dealt one brutal defeat after another", he said at a rally in Florida.

In a meeting with members of his Cabinet, Trump boasted that he had "essentially" fired Mattis by moving up the four-star general's departure date by two months. Shanahan, speaking earlier, largely limited his comments to discussing the Pentagon's co-operation with the Department of Homeland Security on border issues.

The immediate reason for Mattis' resignation was Trump's announcement that he is ordering United States troops out of Syria.

Gorsuch, he voted to grant the appeal, lift the judge's order and allow Trump's new policy to be enforced. But rights groups have challenged his new rules, saying they violate administrative and immigration laws.

Mattis handed in his resignation on December 20 after a series of policy disagreements with Trump, including the president's shock decision - announced on Twitter - to withdraw troops from Syria.

In a brief statement issued by his office, Shanahan said he was looking forward "to working with President Trump to carry out his vision alongside strong leaders" of the USA defence and military establishment.

Trump tweeted days later that Mattis would depart the administration at the beginning of the year, as opposed to his initial departure date of February 28, writing that he had given Mattis a "second chance" in government after he was "ingloriously fired" by former President Barack Obama.

Saying that the Taleban and ISIS terrorists are "fighting each other" in parts of Afghanistan.

The commander in chief said audits of Pentagon war spending must be "private" - an apparent reference to reports produced by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. "Also - looking at the bigger picture for our countries - if what we mutually seek is a partner, then we will likely get a partner".
