116th Congress takes office as the most diverse in USA history

116th Congress takes office as the most diverse in USA history

Republican and Democratic leaders have been invited to meet with President Trump at the White House on Friday to continue their negotiations.

Following a meeting between Trump and top congressional leaders on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the body would not take up the Democratic legislation because Trump wouldn't sign it.

As night fell, the House quickly got to work on the partial government shutdown, which was winding up Day 13 with Trump demanding billions in Mexican border wall funding to bring it to an end.

During his free-wheeling session with reporters, Trump also wrongly claimed that he'd never called for the wall to be concrete.

Reporters were told Thursday that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders would be holding a hastily called late afternoon briefing. The new speaker said she welcomes the "transformative freshman class". "We're not playing games - we have to do it".

Trump has demanded that Congress approve $5.6 billion for construction of a wall on the southern United States border with Mexico - an oft repeated pledge from his 2016 presidential campaign. Democrats don't want to give in to Trump on that, particularly after his negotiating style has been to just demand that Democrats give him what he wants.

'On an nearly daily basis, he attacks our Constitution, our democracy, the rule of law and the people who are in this country.

More than half are working without pay, while the rest are furloughed. "This has a higher goal than next week's pay", he said, adding that many of those affected "are the biggest fans" of his insistence on the wall. Trump said he "may consider" asking his Cabinet to forgo those raises for now. "The Democrats know they can't win based on all of the achievements of "Trump, ' so they are going all out on the desperately needed Wall and Border Security - and Presidential Harassment".

With 235 seats, Democrats now enjoy majority in the US House of Representatives.

"Hello, everybody, attractive place, I haven't seen it", President Donald Trump said as he walked in, wishing the press assembled a happy new year.

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday sent a letter to President Donald Trump inviting him to deliver the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on January 29.

The Democrats' package to end the shutdown includes one bill to temporarily fund Homeland Security at current levels. "I have never had so much support as I have in the last week over my stance for border security, for border control, and for frankly the wall or the barrier". She won the speakership by 220-192 vote over the Republican leader Congress Kevin McCarthy, who is now the House Minority Leader. The broader bill passed 241-190, with seven GOP members voting for it.

Republicans and Democrats have been squabbling over spending bills to keep about a quarter of the government running after hitting an impasse on Trump's demand to fund a border wall with Mexico. On Wednesday, Trump held a Cabinet meeting with a poster of a Game of Thrones meme he tweeted prior to the midterms splayed on the table in front of him for almost two hours.
