British PM Theresa May could further delay Brexit vote

British PM Theresa May could further delay Brexit vote

The European Union is considering ways to help Prime Minister Theresa May convince the British parliament to back the Brexit treaty she agreed with EU leaders last month but ruled out on Monday (8 January) any change to the deal.

The Commons voted by 303 to 296 - a majority of seven - in favour of the cross-party amendment to the Finance Bill tabled by senior Labour MP Yvette Cooper and Conservative former Cabinet minister Nicky Morgan.

"We're all focused in the government on winning parliamentary support in the vote that's coming up next week", he told reporters as he arrived at the meeting in Brussels.

Mr Corbyn hailed the development as an "important step" to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

He said that the City is further ahead in implementing its Brexit contingency plans than many other sectors, but the "closer we get to 29 March without a deal, the more assets will be transferred and headcount hired locally or relocated".

She has promised to secure further assurances from the EU on the most controversial elements of the Brexit deal relating to Northern Ireland, and has held talks with European leaders in recent days.

MPs will vote on 15 January on whether to accept the legally-binding terms of withdrawal negotiated by Mrs May, as well as a framework of future relations with the EU. "The only way MPs can block no deal is by doing a deal - otherwise, the European Union will continue to fast-track its own contingency plans to pull out of the United Kingdom on 29 March", Duff added.

The Brexit deal took almost 2 years to negotiate and only covers separation issues, leaving open the future relationship - but it has provoked anger on all sides in London.

LABOUR could hold a second referendum on a renegotiated Brexit deal if it won a general election, the shadow worldwide trade secretary said yesterday.

Team chairman Stephen Ross said it was time for the franchise to ditch a philosophy that was not working. Joseph's two seasons in charge featured a record of 11 wins and 21 losses.

A "no-deal Brexit" is deemed to be the worst-case scenario, with serious implications for the UK's GDP, prices, stock and supply of medicines produced in Europe, movement of British and European citizens within Europe, and the ability of major UK-based banks and financial institutions to operate across Europe.

Cooper's amendment meant that new power would only be allowed to come into force if there were either a Brexit deal, a decision to extend article 50, or a vote in the Commons specifically approving a no-deal Brexit.

"I don't think anybody can say exactly what will happen in terms of the reaction we will see in Parliament".

But Mr Fox, who backs Mrs May's deal, said it would be "irresponsible to tie the government's hands" at this stage by ruling out any options.

But little has changed since she delayed before Christmas a House of Commons vote on the proposed deal and few observers believe she'll be successful as many rebel lawmakers are locked into their opposition because of public promises they've made to their constituency parties.

"There are no negotiations, because all we have on the table is what we consider given, acquired and approved", he said.

The government, for its part, has forecast a potential economic slump of more than nine percent in the wake of a no-deal Brexit.

The Conservative MP also drew example from his constituency, where he says a business owner told him that in the event of a no deal Brexit, about a third of his 60 staff "would have to go".

But, a majority of lawmakers from across the political spectrum opposed to a no-deal exit have now established their political significance and promised to keep making it harder for the government to leave without a deal.
