Cleveland Browns Hire Freddie Kitchens As Their New Head Coach

Cleveland Browns Hire Freddie Kitchens As Their New Head Coach

We're down to three head-coaching vacancies in the NFL.

Some names to consider that are now on the Browns offensive staff that could appear as the offensive coordinator include senior offensive assistant Al Saunders, wide receivers coach Adam Henry, and running backs coach Ryan Lindley; it has been announced that quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese will not return under Kitchens, eliminating him from the conversation.

Gregg Williams was considered the favorite by analysts to become the new head coach in Cleveland after a thrilling finish to the regular season, but it was reported on Wednesday that Williams will be leaving the team entirely after the Browns opted to give the head coaching job to interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens.

The Browns' offense thrived with Kitchens as offensive coordinator, with rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield and rookie running back Nick Chubb both finishing their rookie campaigns with record-setting seasons. The Browns also interviewed former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, and Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores for the job.

This left me to question, who could Kitchens possibly be thinking about to hire as his coordinators in Cleveland?

The Cleveland Browns have been in the market for a new head coach longer than any other team.

He was promoted to the Vikings OC spot from quarterbacks coach when John DeFilippo was sacked with three games to play in the season. From 2007 to 2017, he held various offensive coaching roles with the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps more importantly, Kitchens oversaw the successful rookie season of quarterback Baker Mayfield. Cleveland will select 17th in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Kitchens becomes the Browns' ninth permanent coach since 2000. Kitchens may be inexperienced but the connection he has with this offensive unit featuring a rookie at two critical positions can not be overstated.
