Polish Police Arrest Huawei Executive, Accused Of Spying For China

Polish Police Arrest Huawei Executive, Accused Of Spying For China

The company has also come under fire for allegations that Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou conspired to defraud banks to unwittingly clear transactions linked to Iran, in violation of U.S. Sanctions.

The two men - one a Chinese citizen who was a former envoy in Poland before moving over to a senior position at Huawei and the other a Pole who held several top government cybersecurity positions - were arrested Tuesday, according to Poland's Internal Security Agency.

One of them is reportedly a sales director for Huawei.

Poland's domestic counterintelligence agency (ABW) arrested a Huawei employee, who worked for the Chinese government in the past, and a former Polish agent of the internal security agency on Tuesday (8 January). The suspect is being threatened with up to 10 years in prison. "We have no comment for the time being", Huawei said in a statement.

He said "both carried out espionage activities against Poland", but did not identify them. The US has effectively blocked Huawei from competing in these markets and in telecom equipment for government offices, so they haven't achieved the same toehold here.

Huawei said it "complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based".

Rod Rosenstein Reportedly Leaving Justice Department After AG Confirmation Hearings
Barr's Senate confirmation hearing begins January 15, which means a confirmation vote at the earliest would occur in mid-February. The newspaper also reported that he suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to expose White House turmoil and dysfunction.

Some European countries have followed the USA and began looking into whether using Huawei's technology could expose the country to China.

The Chinese technology giant is facing increasing pressure across the European Union amid growing concerns that Beijing could use Huawei's gear for spying - something the company has always denied.

"ABW (Internal Security Agency) officials conducted actions, as a result of which, we handed over belongings of one of our employees", Orange Polska said in a statement. U.S. officials have not produced much public evidence for these concerns, but this arrest will underscore Huawei's potentially malicious ambitions.

The Commission spokesperson did not want to respond on whether the European Union executive was concerned about the possibility of Polish or European Union nationals being arrested in China. Approved in 2017, the law states that Chinese "organizations and citizens shall, in accordance with the law, support, co-operate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work". As well as producing smartphones, the Chinese corporation develops mobile network infrastructure used in many countries, which some nations see as a potential security risk.

Australia and New Zealand have also enacted similar bans, leaving Canada the only country in the "Five Eyes" intelligence network not to take steps against the Chinese firm.

"It does point at the sort of connections that may exist between the state intelligence enterprise and private Chinese companies", he said.
