Trump holds immigration roundtable at border patrol station

Trump holds immigration roundtable at border patrol station

Graham and other GOP leaders proposed to let congressional committees hammer out details for funding a border barrier while passing a separate bill to end the shutdown, but Trump shot down the plan, Politico reported.

Mr. Trump wants $5.7 billion to build the wall, which during the 2016 campaign he repeatedly promised to build once in office.

"If this doesn't work out, probably I will do it", Trump said Thursday morning, according to The Hill. "If this doesn't work out, I probably will do it, I would nearly say definitely", Mr. Trump told reporters, adding later, "If we don't make a deal, I would say 100 percent but I don't want to say 100 percent".

Democratic leaders are unanimously opposed to spending money on any new border barriers -although they have offered $1.3 billion to strengthen existing walls and fences, increase hiring at ports of entry and improve technology at the border.

But not everyone in the administration is on board.

Kevin Spacey in court; ordered to stay away from accuser
After several minutes, Spacey got up to go to the bathroom and the 18-year-old left the bar and went home, the complaint states. Spacey will not be required to appear at that pre-trial hearing, as long as he is available by phone, the judge ruled.

The White House has directed the Army Corps of Engineers to comb through its budget in search of money for the wall, including looking at $13.9 billion in unspent disaster relief funds earmarked for areas including hurricane-damaged Puerto Rico, Texas and more than a dozen other states. That's according to a congressional aide familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a lawmaker with a close relationship with the president, discounted that option, saying it was not "under very serious consideration". It would allow the president to divert funds from the Department of Defense to help pay for construction. Efforts at negotiating a broader immigration deal involving immigrants brought to the country illegally as children collapsed with little progress.

Trump has said he is considering declaring a "national emergency" over the wall stalemate that has partially closed the federal government for more than three weeks.

Trump on Thursday gave his strongest public indication yet that he is leaning toward an emergency declaration as he traveled to the Texas border to continue to press his case for the wall.

Republicans are trying to decouple the shutdown, now in its 20th day, from the feud between Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the border wall.
