Kamala Harris hopes to make history with 2020 United States presidential bid

Kamala Harris hopes to make history with 2020 United States presidential bid

Kamala Harris, a first-term US senator and former California attorney general known for her rigorous questioning of US President Donald Trump's nominees, entered the Democratic presidential race on Monday. Harris says in her presidential announcement video released Monday. But our strength is that we fight to reach those ideals [.] So today, the day we celebrate Dr. King, is a very special day for all of us as Americans and I'm honored to be able to make my announcement on the day we commemorate him.

Harris, California's former attorney general who won a seat to replace longtime Democratic Sen.

Said Harris in the clip: "The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values".

"I was honored by and conscious of the vast responsibility I held-the duty to protect those who were the most vulnerable and voiceless members of our society", Harris writes in her book.

Though she has served only two years in the Senate, Harris has drawn attention from Democrats for her trenchant examinations on the Senate Judiciary Committee, particularly during last year's Supreme Court confirmation hearings for now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Afterwards spokesman Jay Carney said: "They are old friends and good friends and he did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general's professional accomplishments and her capabilities".

That has been a constant theme of her appearances over the past year on her book tour, and in early-voting states like Iowa and SC, where she will campaign on Friday. The theme of her nascent campaign is "Kamala Harris, for the people", the same words she spoke as a prosecutor, trying a case in the courtroom.

The senator further invites viewers to join her in Oakland, California, on Sunday, in what Harris' staff say will be the campaign's official launch.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., earlier announced that she was forming a presidential exploratory committee.

"The more deft among the candidates-and we'll see if Harris is among them-will figure out how to distance themselves from their records with honest apologies and, even better, actions that manifest a commitment to change", she wrote.

In the first 30 minutes after her announcement, Harris received individual online contributions from all 50 states, spokesman Ian Sams said on Twitter.

"I had a host of clients that I was obligated to defend and represent", Harris said of being California's attorney general.

Harris plans a formal campaign launch in Oakland on January 27.

When she was elected to the Senate six years later she was just the second black woman ever to serve in the chamber.

"Sooner or later, they're going to have to have a female as president", Smith said.

Harris earned an undergraduate degree from Howard University and her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. She also created the Mortgage Fraud Strike Force.

Her campaign could be aided by the schedule for the state-by-state party nominating process that is scheduled to begin in February 2020.
