Oscars snub Bradley Cooper as director, 'Beale Street' as best picture

Oscars snub Bradley Cooper as director, 'Beale Street' as best picture

The 2019 Oscar nominations are in, and while stars like Lady Gaga, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone and more all earned well-deserved nods, others who were expected to be nominated Tuesday morning didn't hear their name called.

The nominations, announced by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California, included plenty of surprises.

Black Panther made history as the first superhero movie to be nominated for best picture but there was disappointment for Michael B Jordan, who failed to land a spot in the supporting actor category.

The best picture category has long kryptonite to superhero movies like "Black Panther" even though it was the year's biggest domestic box-office hit and a bona fide cultural event. With that, producer Kevin Feige scored his first nod.

And now here we are on Oscar nominations day and Roma leads the total nominations pack with 10, tied with the biting period dark comedy The Favourite.

On Tuesday, the 61-year-old filmmaker received his first ever Best Director Oscar nomination for last year's BlacKkKlansman. He was previously nominated for his original screenplay for "Do the Right Thing" and for the documentary feature "4 Little Girls". Lee also received an honorary Oscar in 2015. And Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Three Identical Strangers didn't get nominated in the Best Documentary category (although I heard some compelling arguments against Strangers and its structure from documentarians so I'm not terribly surprised by that one).

TIMELINE: When Can You Expect Wintry Mix, Possibly Snow This Week?
Wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are possible, creating feels-like temperatures around 15-30 below zero to exposed skin. The National Weather Service is tracking a winter storm that could bring a significant amount snow to Maine.

The same logic would seem to hobble Green Book, whose five nominations do not include a best director nod for Peter Farrelly. Then Alfonso CuarĂ³n's masterful Spanish-language black-and-white Netflix drama Roma somewhat dominated the critics awards, scoring Best Picture trophy after Best Picture trophy.

- Rami Malek, nominated for playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody", is the only first-time Oscar nominee among the men up for best actor.

Gaga has been recognised in the Best Actress category alongside Glenn Close, Melissa McCarthy, Olivia Coleman and Yalitza Aparicio, while Shallow with Bradley Cooper is up for Best Original Song. Roma has ten nominations, including Best Picture, tying The Favourite for most of the year.

Her six prior nods were for "The World According to Garp" (1982), "The Big Chill" (1983), "The Natural" (1984), "Fatal Attraction" (1987), "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) and "Albert Nobbs" (2011).

Having widely seen films in the running could help boost ratings for the Oscars telecast. She's also Marvel's first-ever female production designer. Actor Adam Driver was nominated for actor in a supporting role.

But, Thor believes "A Star is Born" is the favourite. A Star is Born from AT&T Inc's Warner Bros, also a contender, has grossed $US409 million.
