Hundreds of thousands in Iran mark 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

Hundreds of thousands in Iran mark 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

Iran's president also insisted that Iranians "have not asked and will not ask for permission" to develop different types of missiles, Rohani said.

The Iranian people "will not stop saying "Death to America" as long as the USA acts malicious" toward Iran, Khamenei said, referring to Trump's State of the Union address in which the American president, among other things, said: "We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants death to America".

Chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" can commonly be heard in Iranian demonstrations of nationalist fervor, with this one being no exception.

President Hassan Rohani blasted a USA "conspiracy" against Iran as the country marked the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that ended the monarchy and heralded the start of four decades of clerical rule.

Pictures on social media showed some people also demonstrating against corruption, unemployment and high prices.

Iranians burn flags of the United States during commemorations of the 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution in the capital Tehran on February 11, 2019.

Last year, Iran cracked down on protests over poor living standards in over 80 cities and towns that posed the most serious challenge to its clerical leadership since a 2009 revolt over disputed elections.

Thailand Urged to Refuse Bahraini Refugee Footballer Hakeem Al Araibi s Extradition
The Melbourne-based soccer player faces his next scheduled hearing on April 22 and must stay in Thai detention until then. In 2014, he was sentenced to ten years in absentia for the vandalism charge.

Rouhani also vowed Iran would defeat US sanctions, reimposed after President Donald Trump withdrew from Tehran's nuclear accord with world powers previous year.

"The presence of people today on the streets all over Islamic Iran means that the enemy will never reach its evil objectives", Rouhani himself told the crowds, vowing the "US conspiracy" against Iran will never succeed.

"The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran". But he remained defiant as Iranians recalled the end of a monarch who catered to the rich and unleashed secret police on dissenters.

"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties (due to the sanctions) but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", Rouhani said.

"The US should know that we would raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground in the event of a military attack on us", General Yadollah Javani, head of the guard's political bureau, was quoted as saying.

Iranian proxies in the region include the Lebanon-based Hezbollah, several terror groups in Gaza, and Shiite militias in Iraq. They saw the revolution as the starting gun in a competition to push out the strongman Arab nationalism that had taken hold across the Middle East. Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution initially inspired both Islamic militants and Islamists across the Mideast.
