UK Moves to Strip ISIS Shamima Begum Teen of Citizenship

She was one of a group of schoolgirls from London's Bethnal Green neighborhood who went to Syria to marry IS fighters in 2015 at a time when the group's online recruitment program lured many impressionable young people to its self-proclaimed caliphate.

Speaking at the refugee camp in Syria where The Times found her last week, she said: "I don't know what to say".

She was shown a copy of a Home Office letter setting out the action against her.

If Shamima's mother is a Bangladeshi national then the daughter would also be a citizen, Lord Carlile, a former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, told the BBC.

Given Begum's Bangladeshi heritage, it is speculated that she now reverts to being a sole Bangladesh citizen.

The family said it is concerned about Begum's mental health and characterizes her as having been groomed by Islamic State fighters.

Javid says he is relying on a section of the British Nationality Act 1981, which states that he can take away a person's citizenship "if the Secretary of State is satisfied that deprivation is conducive to the public good".

Robert Halfon, Conservative MP for Harlow and chairman of the Commons Education Committee, backed the Home Office move, tweeting: "Absolutely the right decision from @ukhomeoffice @sajidjavid".

The document, obtained by ITV News, was addressed to the girl's mother and said the decision to revoke the citizenship was made "in light of the circumstances of your daughter".

Her family's lawyer, Tasnime Akunjee, said his clients were "disappointed" by the government's decision and were "considering all legal avenues to challenge the decision".

"I think it's a very unsafe decision, it does create this perception that there is a two-tier system and a system that's frankly racist", Maher told BBC's Newsnight.

In a statement, the Home Office said it would not comment on individual cases.

Begum has named her newborn, Jerah, in accordance with the wishes of her jihadist husband, Yago Riedijk, a Dutch convert from Arnhem.

It's reported that two British men, accused of being members of an ISIL cell, were stripped of their citizenship after being captured in Syria in 2018.

Ms Begum has said she does not regret travelling to Syria, however, she said she did not agree with everything the IS group had done.

Alex spoke out after Ms Begum compared the Manchester Arena bombing to military strikes on Isis strongholds, calling the terror attack "retaliation".

The teenager, who said she had had no contact with British officials, added the government should not block her homecoming because she was "just a housewife" while there.

Any challenge is likely to be lengthy and would see her remain in northern Syria for at least two years, according to a former independent reviewer of United Kingdom terrorism legislation.

She told The Times that Kadiza had died after a house was bombed, but the fate of her other friend is still unknown.

Thomas seizes Riviera lead as Woods surges
Woods got to 6 under par through seven holes, but he will need to get up and down for a par from 30 feet at the par-5 17th. Although golf has traditionally been more focused on finesse over fitness, this may well come down to a strongman contest.
