Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un begin talks with one-on-one meeting

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un begin talks with one-on-one meeting

The breakdown denied Trump a much-needed triumph amid growing domestic turmoil back home, including congressional testimony this week by his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who called Trump a "racist" and "con man" and claimed prior knowledge that WikiLeaks would release emails that would damage Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2016.

"Great meetings" and a "Very good dialogue", Trump said on Twitter after dinner with Kim at the French-colonial-era Metropole hotel while the White House said the two planned to sign a "joint agreement" after further talks on Thursday.

What would Seoul do if Washington agrees to withdraw the U.S. Armed Forces from the peninsula for the Pyongyang's promise to abandon nuclear programs?

In May, Kim released three USA citizens detained in North Korea, which Trump hailed as a "positive gesture of goodwill". "We're in position to do something very special".

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Thank you very much.

The tone of the talks was set in a dinner on Wednesday when Mr Trump described Mr Kim as a "great leader" and said he looked forward to helping him achieve a "tremendous" economic future for North Korea.

After holding a working lunch, Kim and Trump plan to sign a joint statement around 2 p.m., according to the White House.

But Trump responded to the question instead, telling reporters: "We're discussing everything".

"I've been saying very much from the beginning that speed is not that important to me".

"If the exchange is going to be economic help to North Korea. without really any tangible evidence of a denuclearization ... then I'm afraid that that really is playing into what exactly Kim Jong-un wants", said William Arkin, a military analyst and columnist for the Guardian.

Trump said Cohen "lied a lot" during Congressional testimony in Washington on Wednesday, though he had told the truth when he said there had been "no collusion" with Russian Federation.

Observers said the pair were at pains to show their relationship had improved since June, with their body language closely mirroring each other.

Kim, who answered a question from a Western journalist for perhaps the first time, said "I believe by intuition that good results will be produced".

Reports since have suggested North Korea has dismantled some nuclear test sites, but some signs point to other sites still being used.

Although many experts are skeptical that Kim will give up the nuclear weapons he likely sees as his best guarantee of continued rule, there was a palpable, carnival-like excitement among many in Hanoi as final preparations were made for Wednesday's summit opening.

Earlier, North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un said he would welcome the opening of a USA liaison office in his capital.

The U.S. official said North Korea had proposed closing part of its Yongbyon nuclear complex in exchange for lifting "basically all" United Nations sanctions except those directly targeting its weapons programs.

Trump wants Kim to agree to dismantle his nuclear sites in a verifiable way, while Kim is seeking relief from crushing USA sanctions hobbling his economy.

Last year, at the Singapore summit, Trump caught US ally South Korea off guard by announcing the suspension of major USA military exercises with the South. Trump critics said he squandered critical USA leverage before the North had taken any concrete steps toward denuclearization.
