MS Dhoni plays hide and seek with his fan in Nagpur

MS Dhoni plays hide and seek with his fan in Nagpur

Virat Kohli amassed his 40th one-day worldwide century but it was Vijay Shankar's part-time seam bowling that helped India to a tense eight-run victory over Australia in Nagpur.

Defending 11 runs and with Marcus Stoinis on strike Shankar struck first ball, pinning the big-hitting Australian in front for 52 for his first ODI wicket.

Shankar said he would not over-react after taking match-winning wickets but is glad that he could help the tea win.

The Indian skipper's innings was laced with 10 boundaries while Kohli also shared a crucial 81-run stand with Vijay Shankar (46) and 67-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (21) before the hosts were bundled out for 250 by Australia in their stipulated 50 overs.

Kohli is now nine centuries short of the ODI record despite having appeared in fewer than half the number of matches played by India legend Sachin Tendulkar, the current holder.

"It's important to look ugly at times, and come through and win", Kohli said.

Jones dominated all five rounds of their main event bout, comprehensively outstriking and outgrappling the 30-year-old. Smith, meanwhile, had been on a tear since moving up from middleweight. "I don't care what Uncle Fester has to say".

Put in to bat, India lost their first wicket in the opening over when opener Rohit Sharma (0) was sent packing by pacer Pat Cummins.

Kohli, the world´s top-ranked ODI batsman, went for on the counter-attack, hitting two fours off the last two balls of the 18th over by Zampa to underline his top form.

The fall of Rohit's wicket brought Kohli.

The result means Australia will lose the series if they suffer another defeat in Ranchi on Friday.

Kuldeep, who was the most impressive bowler on show, was taken to cleaners by the two Aussies who creamed off 15 runs in the 43rd over to ease some pressure. India lost Jadhav and Dhoni in consecutive balls.

Australia will take some solace from the fact that some 248 of India's 250 runs were scored when Kohli was at the crease, with Cummins insisting there are plenty of positives as the World Cup looms large. But Kohli completed his century before getting out in the 48th over by Cummins. The left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav claimed three for 54 while Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets and conceded only 29 runs from his 10 overs before Shankar sealed the victory.
