Ethiopian Airlines crash relatives offered earth for ceremony

Ethiopian Airlines crash relatives offered earth for ceremony

Flight data recorders of Boeing 737 MAX planes that crashed in Ethiopia and Indonesia show "clear similarities", Ethiopia's transport minister said Sunday as the USA maker announced it was completing a software update for its anti-stall system.

The Minister did not immediately disclose the exact similarities between the two accidents, however, investigations into the Ethiopian crash revealed serious instrument failures that were also discovered to have caused the Indonesian crash.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane was carrying 149 passengers and eight crew members when the jet crashed into the ground.

It marked the second deadly crash in months involving the 737 Max, the newest and fastest-selling aircraft in Boeing's fleet.

In the case of the Lion Air flight, pilots had difficulties with a new system on the Boeing 737 Max which is created to keep the plane from stalling.

Earlier, French aviation investigators completed work on the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, or black boxes as they are often called, and handed over their findings to their Ethiopian counterparts.

This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text.

The Seattle Times reported that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) "pushed the agency's safety engineers to delegate safety assessments to Boeing itself".

New Zealand Charges Main Shooter in Mosque Attack with Murder
A fourth person detained in the aftermath of the attack was later determined to be an armed bystander who wanted to help police. Ms Ardern, who arrived in Christchurch Saturday, said the shooter was not on any watchlist and did not have a criminal record.

The document was shared with AFP by a relative of a victim, who asked not to be named.

The black box of the Ethiopian Airlines' Boeing 737 Max that crashed on March 17 has been recovered and initial findings pointed to many similarities to Lion Air's crashed plane in Indonesia that happened in October previous year.

In both cases flight tracking data showed the aircraft's altitude had fluctuated sharply, as the planes seemed to experience erratic climbs and descents.

Officials say 157 people from 35 different countries were killed when the Nairobi-bound plane crashed shortly after takeoff on March 11.

According to AP, officials have begun delivering bags of earth to family members of the victims of the crash instead of the remains of their loved ones because the identification process is going to take such a long time.

- Graphs of the two sets of data are "very, very similar", the person said on Monday.

But despite the recent sell-off, Boeing was still up 14% this year as the company's fourth-quarter-earnings report highlighted strong fundamentals and positive expectations surrounding the rollout of the 777X, its 747 replacement. "He was the pillar for his whole family", Mr Bilew said.

Both involved Boeing 737 Max 8 planes.
