Early election talk grows as Brexit supporters accuse British MPs of betrayal

Early election talk grows as Brexit supporters accuse British MPs of betrayal

Former Education Secretary Nicky Morgan's comments came a day after Parliament rejected May's divorce deal for a third time, rebuffing the prime minister's plea to "put aside self and party".

"If the government refused and Theresa May felt she could not implement what Parliament had identified as a way of leaving the European Union, then I think we would have to think very hard about whether a cross-party coalition. could do that in order to make sure that the United Kingdom does leave the European Union in an orderly fashion", Morgan told the BBC.

Ms. May had been hoping that her decision to hold a vote only on the 600-page withdrawal agreement, which is one part of her overall Brexit deal, would have been enough to sway critics.

However he added: "I think we also..."

While the United Kingdom is now scheduled to leave the bloc in two weeks, the government may seek a longer extension, although such a move would require Britain to contest the upcoming European Parliament elections.

Cheers rang out around Parliament Square as the Prime Minister's 58-vote Commons defeat was announced this afternoon, while several protestors did a lap of honour and rang their own "liberty bell".

Ex-PM Sir John the situation should be taken over by a national government to resolve the crisis.

Britain had been due to leave the EU on Friday, the long-heralded March 29 "Independence Day", but with paralysis in Parliament May asked European leaders last week for a little more time.

The failure by Parliament to agree the terms of Brexit has left businesses unable to plan even a few weeks ahead.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said May should call for a general election in the wake of the vote.

Exhausted of waiting, MPs this week gave themselves unprecedented powers to vote on a range of options for Britain's future relationship with the EU.

However, 34 members of the European Research Group voted against, along with 10 Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MPs.

None of the eight proposed Brexit options secured a majority in the last round of "indicative votes" on 27 March, but the options which received the most votes were a customs union with the EU or a referendum on any deal. Conservatives continue to shoot down election talk and May faces pressure to quit.

Tom Brake, a Liberal Democrat MP, told Al Jazeera that while May's deal is "as dead as a dodo", he was confident Parliament would take the initiative on breaking the Brexit impasse next week.

However, Conservative Party chairperson Brandon Lewis said the government did not support any of those options.

Retired charity worker Mandy Childs, one of a band of Brexit supporters walking across England to join the "Leave Means Leave" protest, said she felt "heartbroken".

Lewis, the Conservative Party chairman, said all options were on the table but that a customs union with the EU - an idea backed by the opposition Labour Party and some Conservatives - would be hard.

"We should be doing everything we can to leave the European Union in good order as quickly as we can, as we said in our manifesto and as we've said to Parliament", Lewis said.

"I don't think it is ideal, I would prefer a Conservative government with a clear majority".
