MPs may force Theresa May to ask for longer Brexit delay

MPs may force Theresa May to ask for longer Brexit delay

The meeting finally wound up shortly before 5pm, but ministers were held inside without access to their mobile phones while Mrs May prepared her statement.

If they do not agree a single way forward, she proposed putting a number of options to MPs "to determine which course to pursue".

In a Tweet following the statement, EU Council President Donald Tusk called for patience.

If the two leaders fail to agree a compromise, Mrs May said options would be put before parliament, and the government would respect the decision of MPs.

Cooper is working with Tory backbencher Oliver Letwin, the architect of the "indicative votes" process that has so far failed to come up with an alternative to May's deal or no deal.

Meanwhile, the EU's chief negotiator has said a no-deal Brexit is now more likely but can still be avoided.

There are rumours the Prime Minister could bring her deal back for another "Meaningful Vote" this week.

Michel Barnier said a long extension to the UK's 12 April exit date had "significant risks for the EU" and a "strong justification would be needed".

Any resolution must take the United Kingdom out of the European Union by May 22, the Prime Minister said, and the Withdrawal Agreement setting out the terms of the "divorce" from Brussels was not up for discussion - only the non-binding Political Declaration on the future relationship.

Yvette Cooper presented the bill this afternoon, and it is set to be debated on Wednesday.

The group behind the bill, which also includes former Tory chair Dame Caroline Spelman, Commons Brexit Committee chair Hilary Benn, former attorney general Dominic Grieve and Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb, aims to push it through all of its Commons stages on Thursday, and hopes the House of Lords would then grant its approval ahead of the emergency European Union summit on April 10.

"We are now in a really unsafe situation with a serious and growing risk of no-deal in 10 days' time", said opposition Labour lawmaker, Yvette Cooper, who has proposed the legislation alongside eleven others from several political parties, including members of May's Conservatives. The Prime Minister has a responsibility to prevent that happening. She needs to put forward a proposal, including saying how long an extension she thinks we need to sort things.

Last week, Parliament took control of the process away from the government in order to hold a series of votes created to find an alternative way forward. "But it is definitely worth trying", he added.
