Head of US Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned

Head of US Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned

After CBS News reported Nielsen meant to resign Sunday from the position she has held since December 2017, the president confirmed on Twitter she would be leaving her position.

Kevin McAleenan, commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, will become acting secretary pending confirmation of Nielsen's successor, Trump said. He said he had confidence that McAleenan "will do a great job!"

The 46-year-old Nielsen, who would swap elegant office attire for jeans and aviator shades on her frequent visits to the border, kept a low profile when she joined the administration at its outset in January 2017.

When participants in a White House session on immigration quoted Trump as referring to African nations as "sh*thole" countries, Nielsen came to the president's defence. The people say she has been frustrated by difficulty getting other departments to help with the growing number of families coming crossing the border. Nielsen faced more public pressure after the Trump administration enacted a policy of family separation that resulted in thousands of migrant children being separated from their parents, which the president ultimately reversed. During the government shutdown over Trump's insistence for funding for a border wall, Nielsen's standing inside the White House even appeared to rise.

In her resignation letter posted on Twitter, Nielsen alluded to her rocky tenure.

Trump has previously criticized Nielsen for insufficient firmness, telling reporters last November that she needed to get "much tougher" on the border.

She proposed an alternative plan that would slow down entries at legal ports. But she was also instrumental in ending the policy.

After the software update is approved, it would take about a day to deploy and an hour to upgrade each aircraft. But those situations were not listed in the flight manual used by American Airlines, Reuters said.

Nielsen took over the position in December 2017 after John Kelly left the post to become the president's chief of staff.

Trump announced Nielsen's resignationn Sunday. As Trump said last Friday when he pulled his nominee to lead ICE, he wants to bring about a "tougher" era of immigration policy and enforcement.

Trump's official chief of staff, for now, is far-right firebrand Mick Mulvaney.

Some are celebrating Nielsen's departure - and if we are optimistic, perhaps her experience will serve as a caution to those in the process of selling their souls to Trump.

Last night, on the second floor of the East Wing of the White House residence - in a room called the yellow oval - Nielsen, Mulvaney and the President met. Nielsen tried to present a path forward that was legal and in compliance with USA laws but the President said to her, "This isn't working".
