Lawyer: Challenge to NYC's vaccination order in the works

Avi, who did not give his last name due to privacy concerns, said he doesn't believe the outbreak is as serious as Mayor Bill de Blasio makes it out to be. The disease is transmitted when people who have not been vaccinated come into contact with others, so areas around worldwide airports or proximity to communities who shun vaccines are of particular concern.

The most recent tally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 465 cases across the U.S.so far this year, two-thirds of them in NY state.

Many employers in New York City could no longer require job applicants to be tested for marijuana use under legislation approved this week.

Avi called Bill de Blasio an anti-semite, and stressed that measles outbreak wasn't affecting that many people.

Immunizations have been such a resounding public health success that most Americans have never seen a child with measles, mumps, diphtheria or numerous other diseases that once killed or maimed thousands every year.

The number of people sickened by the highly contagious, occasionally deadly disease climbed by 78 during the first week of April, as four more states reported their first cases of 2019.

The year is already shaping up to be one of the worst for measles outbreaks across the nation.

Sussman also represented a group of parents in suburban Rockland County who challenged the county executive's order barring unvaccinated children from indoor public spaces. It's another significant milepost on the road to what will probably become a record outbreak after vaccines led to the disease's "elimination" in the United States.

A state judge sided with Mr. Sussman and the parents, issuing a preliminary injunction against the county's emergency order.

Anti-vaccination protesters have lately taken to equating public health measures like Rockland County's ban to Nazi persecution of Jews - a comparison that has earned the rebuke of the Anti-Defamation League and the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum.

Other than encouraging residents to vaccinate themselves or their children, Westchester County is not taking any action at this time, Latimer said.

Rockland County, located near New York City, has also declared a 30-day public health emergency over a measles outbreak there that has seen 168 people contract the disease, according to the CDC. The news was good: Measles declined worldwide by almost 80 percent between 2000 and 2016, with fatalities - mostly among children younger than age 5 - plummeting to about 90,000 per year from about 550,000.

The mayor said an estimated 1,800 children in the neighborhood are still unvaccinated, so it was "time to take a more muscular approach", he said. And that puts anyone with a compromised immune system in danger-including newborn babies who are too young to be vaccinated, pregnant women, and people with cancer or on immunosuppressive therapies because of transplants.

If a child in your school or facility exhibits signs or symptoms of measles, please do not send them to a health care facility unannounced.

The law would not affect the testing of pilots, truck drivers, law enforcers, construction workers, and workers who supervise children or medical patients.

Westchester officials say eight cases of measles have been confirmed in their county.
